After maintaining their flawless record for the season with a stakes win on Ipswich Cup Day over the weekend the rejuvenated Gai’s Choice could be given a shot at Group 1 glory in Saturday’s 2012 Tattersall’s Tiara at Eagle Farm.
A promising filly in her younger season, Gai’s Choice enjoyed city success in the summer of 2011 winning a feature on Gold Coast Magic Millions Day.
Frustration was to follow however as she failed to win another race until last Month.
Gai’s Choice has enjoyed a purple patch of form since returning to the care of the Warwick Farm-based David Pfiffer, the now four-year-old General Nediym mare having spent an unsuccessful four month stint with Brett Partelle.
First-up off a four month break she won a Benchmark 80 at Rosehill over 1100m on May 12 before a blistering six length victory at Rosehill over 1300m a fortnight later.
Patience finally paid off for connections on the weekend with Gai’s Choice posting a good stakes victory in the Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m) at Ipswich.
Pfieffer will now recommend to connections that the mare back up this weekend and take on a class field in the $500,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m), the final elite level race of the current racing season.
“Maturity is all I can put it down to,” Pfieffer said of Gai’s Choice recent winning streak.
“When you get a mare in form like she is, then you have to keep going.
“I will put it to the owners that we may as well throw our hat in the ring for the (Tattersall’s Tiara) next week.
“This is the race I picked out as an ideal target from the start of this preparation.”
