Shenzhou Steeds Wins 2012 Ipswich Cup

Michael Moroney-trained gelding Shenzhou Steeds has recorded his first victory at Listed level by taking out the $200,000 2012 Ipswich Cup (2150m) today.

Ridden by Eddie Wilkinson, the Ishiguru four-year-old sat off the pace for majority of the race as favourite Kinnersley kicked away to lead.

As they came into the straight it was still Kinnersley who looked to be the eventual winner but Shenzhou Steed was able to wear the gelding down as they approached the post to cross the line in front.

Trainer Moroney praised both the horse and Wilkinson, a rider with whom he has had a long association.

“I thought it was a great ride, he rode exactly to instructions,” Moroney said.

“He used his draw, then came out and attacked at the right time…he just rode him picture perfect, he really did.”

It was Shenzhou Steeds’ first race at any distance longer than 1600 metres but Moroney was always confident he would make the trip.

“We always thought when we bought him that he’d make this sort of horse with a bit of time,” Moroney said.

“Even though he’s not really bred to, he’s a nice big horse, a big action.”

Wilkinson was thrilled to again be riding for Moroney and said he was confident of a result after riding the gelding during the week.

“I’m just fortunate that Mike put me on the horse,” Wilkinson said.

“I worked him a couple of times up here and his work’s been really nice. A great trainer and thank you for the ride.

“It couldn’t have worked out better.”

The New Zealand-bred gelding boasts an impressive earlier career record of six wins from 14 starts and has now collected more than $250,000 in prize money.

Kinnersley scored runner-up honours while outsider Warrior Within produced an excellent run to finish third.

The Ipswich Cup may be over for another year but there is still plenty of action left in this year’s Winter Carnival. Next week, will have great value odds on the top racing action at Eagle Farm that includes the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara.
