Belltone Takes Victory in 2012 Eye Liner Stakes

Eye Liner Stakes 2012 favourite Belltone has produced an excellent run to take victory in the 1350 metre feature sprint at Ipswich today.

The Kelso Wood-trained gelding failed to gain a start in last Saturday’s Stradbroke Handicap but he was the class horse in the 16-horse Eye Liner Stakes field.

Ridden by Chris Munce from barrier eight, the six-year-old got in an ideal position early just behind the lead and when Munce found him an opening at the top of the straigh,t he showed tremendous finishing ability.

The son of Brahms hit the line hard to take top billings in the $175,000 event ahead of Jetset Lad and Adnocon.

Belltone was yet to record a victory when he joined Wood’s stables in late 2010 but has since become one of Wood’s favourite runners.

“This horse I’ve always had a lot of confidence in him,” Wood said.

“I think he’ll keep going, he’ll probably win a Group 1 race.

“I’ve got horses like Sizzling, Zero Rock I’ve had and many others. It’s good to go the races with the confidence that they’re going to really put in and run a good race.”

It puts the icing on the cake of a solid preparation for the Brisbane-based sprinter who finished 1/2 length behind winner Tiger Tees in the BRC Sprint and runner-up in tough conditions in the QTC Cup.

Belltone will now head to Caloundra in two weeks time to tackle the Listed Glasshouse Handicap.
