Adroitly Justifies Favouritism to Win 2012 Stayers Cup

Odds-on favourite Adroitly has justified his short price at Rosehill today, taking out the 2012 Stayers Cup (3200m) ahead of Roi D’Jeu.

Adroitly justified their favouritism to become the 2012 Stayers Cup winner

Following the scratching of Reuben Percival yesterday, the Peter Snowden-trained four-year-old was backed into $2.00 and produced an excellent run at the back end of the race in heavy conditions.

With the track rated a heavy 10, jockey Kerrin McEvoy held the gelding off the pace for the majority of the race as Star Hawk and Roi D’Jeu did the hard work up front.

At the half way mark of the 3200-metre event, the son of Octagonal was five lengths behind the leaders as the field struggled to get through the heavy ground.

As the field approached the final bend, Roi D’Jeu held a comfortable lead but McEvoy made his move and from that moment on it was a two-horse race.

Roi D’Jeu held the lead for the majority of the final straight but Adroitly produced a strong finish to overtake the Montjeu gelding within the final 100 metres and claim top honours by 1/2 length.

Trainer Snowden admitted the horse was no superstar but praised his ability to consistenly produce tough, honest efforts.

“He’s no worldbeater, he’s no champion, he won’t go down in the annuals as one of our greatest horses at Darley,” Snowden said.

“But he’s one of the most consistent and honest we have and it’s a great result today.

“They can knock him, they can bag him. He doesn’t win often but he wins when you need him.”

It was an excellent ride from McEvoy who picked the perfect moment to peel around the outside, giving Adroitly enough time to run down Roi D’Jeu in tough conditions.

“My horse was always going to come home,” McEvoy said.

“Fifty metres is a long way in these sort of conditions.”
