Fantastic Chance for Nolan in 2012 Ipswich Cup

Toowoomba-based gelding Fantastic Blue gets the chance to delight experienced trainer Paul Nolan for the second time this winter when he lines up in Saturday’s Listed $200,000 2012 Ipswich Cup (2150m).

Fantastic Blue will run from barrier two in Saturday's Ipswich Cup

Nolan could not wipe the smile off his face late last month at Doomben when Fantastic Blue stormed home at triple figure odds to claim top honours in the Group 3 Premier’s Cup.

Nolan said training a 100-1 winner at Eagle Farm or Doomben was one of his career ambitions and he believes the horse that achieved that for him will again perform this weekend.

“He’s a very good horse this fella,” Nolan said.

With Premier’s Cup rider Tim Bell on the sidelines with suspension, Scott Galloway will take the ride on the Danehill Dancer five-year-old.

Galloway has ridden the gelding to two of his career victories and Nolan is confident to let him take over race tactics from barrier two this weekend.

“He’s drawn two alley, he’s never drawn two alley in his life,” Nolan said.

“I’ll just leave it up to Scotty and you know, we’ll see.”

Bought for $55,000 at the 2008 Magic Millions Yearling Sale, Fantastic Blue has provided plenty of success for Nolan, winning 11 times from 46 starts and collecting over $385,000 in prize money.

He is currently paying $11.00 to take out Saturday’s feature event with experienced gelding Ginga Dude ($3.20) holding slight favouritism ahead of Gai Waterhouse-trained Kinnersley ($3.60).

Ginga Dude is coming off consecutive place finishes in Group races at the Brisbane Winter Carnival while Kinnersley was last seen winning the Listed Lord Mayor’s Cup at Rosehill last month.

It will be a remarkable effort if Ginga Dude can win tomorrow’s Ipswich Cup as he will have to break a weight-carrying record when he carries 60kg from barrier 11.

Other horses running in the stayer’s event include Mr Light Blue and last-start winner Ausworld.
