Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Peter Snowden’s up-and-comer Adroitly is the early market mover ahead of Saturday’s Stayers Cup 2012 at Rosehill Gardens with the price easing on former odds-on favourite Reuben Percival.
There are just eight horses left in the field for the $100,000 Listed Stayers Cup (3200m) in Sydney this weekend after the early scratching of #7 The Pentagon.
When Stayers Cup odds opened at bookmaker.com.au yesterday the Gai Waterhouse-trained Reuben Percival, five length winner of the race last year, was the $1.95 favourite.
The classy stayer was tipped to enjoy the step back in class after running fifth to Lights Of Heaven in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) at Eagle Farm last Saturday and return to the winning form that saw them beat home The Verminator in the Listed Winter Cup (2400m) at Warwick Farm two back.
Steady money has come in for Adroitly however with Reuben Percival out to $2 while Snowden’s Octagonal four-year-old has firmed in from $3 to $2.80.
Due to be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy on the equal 58kg topweight along with the favourite, Adroitly was last seen finishing a length away fourth behind Reuben Percival in the Winter Cup on June 2.
The start before the improving galloper scored an eye-catching win over Legsman, with Reuben Percival third, in the Listed WJ McKell Cup (2400m) at Randwick.
Stepping up to the two-miles for the first time the punters are backing the second elect with Adroitly looking to turn the tables on their last start conqueror.
“It is a nice race for Adroitly and I’m looking forward to seeing how he goes over the 3200m,” Snowden said.
“’His win at Randwick in the McKell Cup was good and he was doing as good as anything late at Warwick Farm.
“He was strong on the line. He has won a race over 2800m at Canterbury and finished fourth in a race over the same distance at Flemington in the spring.”
The other notable market movers in the Stayers Cup betting at bookmaker.com.au are then the Craig Ritchie-trained Roi D’Jeu who has come in from $14 to $12 and Anthony Cummings’ exciting Zabeel gelding Emeritus in from $10 to $9.
Roi D’Jeu’s recent form, including their Winter Cup fifth, may not be their best but the Montjeu six-year-old has good form over the 3200-metres back in New Zealand when seventh in the 2011 Auckland Cup and fourth in the 2010 NZ Cup.
Emeritus meanwhile steps up in both class and distance here but the New Zealand-bred four-year-old has been impressing at tracks including Wyong and Gosford this season earning their shot here.
