Kelso Wood’s six-year-old galloper Belltone has opened clear favourite to win the Eye Liner Stakes 2012 on Ipswich Cup Day this Saturday, the handicap clash attracting a capacity field.
Due to jump at 3:45pm as Ipswich Cup Day Race 7 the $175,000 Listed City of Ipswich Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) field features 16 starters plus two emergencies, Brahms gelding Belltone the top fancy.
In the Eye Liner Stakes odds at bookmaker.com.au Belltone pays $3 to win their first race since September last year.
Third-up for the season the gelding has been in excellent form this time in.
In their resuming run on May 19 they came within a half length when fifth to Tiger Tees in the Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m).
Last start they relished the Heavy (8) track at Eagle Farm on June 2 and ran a slashing second to Celtic Dancer in the Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m).
Saturday they will start from barrier eight (into seven with emergencies out) with top jockey Chris Munce, aboard for their QTC Cup second, retaining the ride.
Despite the field size there is just one other runner in the Eye Liner Stakes betting markets at single-figure odds to win with Riva De Lago paying $8.
Drawn wide in barrier 16 with Michael Walker engaged for the ride the Con Karakatsanis-trained Encosta De Lago four-year-old was a well beaten 11th last time out in the QTC Cup.
Failing to let down in the wet that day their previous run when beating home Torio’s Quest to win over 1300-metres at Scone on May 18 was more promising and indicative of their form for Saturday’s showdown.
Other longer-priced fancies in the top half of the market include:
- #3 Adnocon ($10) – Out for their third consecutive Eye Liner Stakes win, hasn’t raced since their 10th in the Magic Millions Cup on the Gold Coast in January but impressed with a good barrier trial win at Rosehill late last month
- #6 Gundy Son ($10) – Drawn on the rails in barrier one but it’s a big field so don’t want to get caught up there, one of two in the race for Rob Heathcote the six-year-old comes off a fourth to Excellantes over 1110m at Doomben before which they were eighth over this distance to Tiger Tees, ran second last year coming off better form than this time round
- #4 Durham Town ($12) – Heathcote’s other runner caught the eye when fourth in both the Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1350m) and Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m) in their two most recent, quality mare with genuine claims if she handles the distance this time
- #9 Falino ($13) – Jeffrey Caught-trained local comes off a fourth to Audacious Spirit at Doomben over 1200m, steps up to the 1350m for the first time since last winter when they won the Group 3 BTC Classic
