Reuben Percival Tops Stayers Cup Odds 2012

Gai Waterhouse’s defending champion Reuben Percival has opened the odds-on favourite to post back-to-back wins in the 2012 Stayers Cup at Rosehill Gardens in Sydney this Saturday.

The Al Akbar gelding enjoyed a strong five length victory over Splendid Honours in the $100,000 Listed Stayer’s Cup (3200m) in the wet 12 months ago and looks on track to record their second success in the quality handicap this weekend.

In the current Stayers Cup odds at Australia’s leading online bookie bookmaker.com.au the five-year-old pays $1.95, Reuben Percival drawn in the far outside barrier nine.

Originally Nash Rawiller was booked to partner with the favourite but after the hoop came down with an illness this week they will be replaced by Reuben Percival’s 2011 Stayers Cup winning jockey Tommy Berry.

Reuben Percival has been in good form over the past couple of months.

Three starts back they ran third to the Peter Snowden-trained Adroitly in the Listed WJ McKell Cup (2400m) at Randwick before going on to defeat Chris Waller’s former Group 1 winner The Verminator in the Listed Winter Cup (2400m) at Warwick Farm.

Last Saturday they ran a credible fifth behind Peter Moody’s spring-bound mare Lights Of Heaven in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m), Reuben Percival to enjoy the drop back in class on Saturday.

For their Stayers Cup win last year the horse carried 53kg and while they go up to 58kg this year, equal top weight with their WJ McKell Cup conqueror Adroitly, they are still the rank horse in the field.

Adroitly, who sees the two miles for the first time here, occupies the second line of Stayers Cup betting at a quote of $3.

The three next best fancied in the markets are then:

  • #6 Emeritus ($10) – Anthony Cummings-trained Zabeel four-year-old comes off some very promising form at Wyong and Gosford, distance is the query
  • #4 Reigning ($12) – Con Karakatsanis-trained Choisir colt was outclassed when eight in the Queensland Derby last Saturday but has potential and shouldn’t be discounted
  • #3 Roi D’Jeu ($14) – Didn’t handle the slow track when fifth to Reuben Percival in the Winter Cup last time out, could be scratched with a hoof abscess, but has two runs back in New Zealand over the 3200metres, both competitive
