Gai Waterhouse Classic 2012 – Final Field and Barrier Draw

A bumper day of racing action will take place for Ipswich Cup Day and one of the key support races to the feature event is the Listed $100,000 2012 Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m).

Mascareri will be the top weight in the 2012 Gai Waterhouse Classic

A full field of 18 horses plus five emergencies have been named to compete in the fillies and mares event, with Peter Snowden-trained mare Mascareri set to carry the top weight of 59kg from barrier six.

The five-year-old mare has had limited racing this winter but impressed in her only start when taking out the Listed Silk Stocking on the Gold Coast on May 5.

A daughter of Commands, Mascareri has won eight times from 21 career starts and collected over $370,000 in prize money.

Heading into the race in excellent form is New Zealand-bred mare Andromache who is chasing a fifth consecutive victory.

The Mornington-based four-year-old won her last New Zealand start and since then has won a handicap event in Mornington by five lengths and also scored victory twice at Sandown.

She faces a step up in class and with a field that includes horses with black-type success including Sophie’s Spirit who won the Group 3 Herald Sun Stakes in November.

The Max Hinton-trained five-year-old finished runner-up in the Group 3 Glenglogan Stakes at Doomben and will appreciate an expected dry surface after struggling on a heavy Eagle Farm track last start.

Experienced Queensland jockey Chris Munce will ride the five-year-old daughter of Invincible Spirit from barrier 15.

Another horse coming into the race in good form is General Nediym mare Gai’s Choice who will attempt to score a third consecutive victory when she runs from barrier 19.

Trained by David Pfieffer, the four-year-old won at Rosehill first-up on May 12 before dominating the field last-start to win by six lengths.

Also set to line up on Saturday is three-time Group level winner Montana Flyer, Les Kelly-trained Beethog and last-start winner Dual Chamber.
