Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Superstar filly Atlantic Jewel is the early short-price favourite to take out the prestigious 2012 Cox Plate (2040m) this spring.
The unbeaten three-year-old impressed when returning from injury for two dominant victories at Sydney’s Autumn Carnival and is currently being offered at $4.00 in the bookmaker.com.au Cox Plate market.
The Fastnet Rock three-year-old won the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes by four lengths and then beat a quality field of sprinters by more than a length in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes.
Bought for $320,000 at the 2010 Magic Millions Yearling Sale, the Mark Kavanagh-trained filly has well and truly paid back her price tag by already collecting $922,000 from just seven career starts.
In a clear sign of the youngster’s ability, the next best in the Cox Plate market is glamour mare More Joyous at $11.00.
More Joyous cemented her position as a genuine star in the autumn when she recorded four wins from four starts including the Doncaster Mile and the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
The Gai Waterhouse-trained five-year-old has a remarkable record of 19 wins from 26 starts and has collected more than $4.2 million in prize money.
Unlikely to travel to Australia for the weight-for-age event is the world’s top rated horse, Frankel, but the British star features next in the market at $13.00 with Australian youngster Mosheen.
Trained at Newmarket by Sir Henry Cecil, Frankel has won all 10 of his career starts including six times at Group 1 level.
Robert Smerdon-trained Mosheen was one of the stars of the autumn, winning four of five starts including the Australian Guineas, Randwick Guineas and the Vinery Stud Stakes.
Another unlikely Cox Plate starter is wonder mare Black Caviar but the prospect of the world’s best sprinter being tested over 2000 metres is a mouth-watering prospect and she joins Cape Blanco and Crackerjack King at $15.00.
Other horses featuring at the top end of the early Cox Plate market include multiple Group 1 winner Manighar ($17.00), Melbourne Cup third place-getter Lucas Cranach ($19.00) and 2011 Golden Rose winner Manawanui ($21.00).
Markets are now available for a number of the spring features so head to bookmaker.com.au to stay updated and back an early winner.
