Gai Waterhouse Classic 2012 – Nominations

Ipswich will host the feature meeting in Queensland this Saturday for Ipswich Cup Day and one of the highlights on the eight-race program is the 2012 Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m).

Mascareri is one of the top horses nominated for the 2012 Gai Waterhouse Classic

Thirty two horses have been nominated for the $100,000 Listed event but that number will be reduced to 16 when final acceptances are made tomorrow.

One of the top nominations is Peter Snowden-trained mare Mascareri who is fresh off a win in the Listed Silk Stocking at the Gold Coast last month.

The daughter of Commands has scored eight victories from 21 starts and collected more than $370,000 in prize money.

Joining Mascareri as one of the more successful runners included in nominations is fellow five-year-old mare Sophie’s Spirit.

The Max Hinton-trained horse impressed when runner-up in the Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes last month but will have to bounce back from her last-start eighth in the Dane Ripper Stakes.

Robert Heathcote-trained mare Funtantes is yet to place in the Queensland winter carnival but the five-year-old has been in solid form.

The daughter of Easy Rocking has recorded consecutive fourth-place finishes in the Group 3 Glenlogand Park Stakes and the Group 2 QTC Cup.

Three-time Group level winner Montana Flyer has not finished better than fifth in five starts this year but impressed in a barrier trial earlier this month.

The Grafton-based mare has just four wins from 35 starts but with three of this being in lucrative Group level events, she has collected over $500,000 in prize money.

Other horses nominated for the Gai Waterhouse Classic include last-start winner Kumali and Les Kelly-trained pair Beethog and Skating On Ice.

All the betting on the Ipswich Cup Day action will open later this week and the best place to back a winner is
