2012 Stayers Cup Field & Barrier Draw Released

Following the action of the Brisbane Winter Carnival the current racing season winds down this Saturday with one of the key events being the Stayers Cup 2012 at Sydney’s Rosehill Gardens.

Set to run as Rosehill Race 5 at 1:45pm this year’s edition of the $100,000 Listed Stayers Cup (3200m), run over the same classic two-mile cup distance as the spring’s iconic Melbourne Cup in November, has drawn a final field of nine gallopers.

Equal 58kg topweights are the Peter Snowden-trained Adroitly and Gai Waterhouse’s late entry Reuben Percival who won the Stayers Cup by five lengths 12 months ago.

Progressive four-year-old Octagonal gelding Adroitly won the Listed WJ McKell Cup (2400m) at Randwick two back before their last start fourth beaten only a length by Reuben Percival in the Listed Winter Cup (2400m) at Warwick Farm on June 2.

Al Akbar five-year-old Reuben Percival meanwhile backed up from their Winter Cup win to run in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) at Eagle Farm on Stradbroke Handicap Day last Saturday but could only manage to finish six lengths away fifth to the Peter Moody-trained Lights Of Heaven.

“He has come through the Brisbane Cup well and travelled back to Sydney well,” Waterhouse’s racing manager Bruce Slade said.

“He won the race well last year and certainly the two miles won’t be a problem. He’ll stay all day.”

The remainder of the Stayers Cup field is all on the 54kg minimum including the only last start winner in the line-up, Mick Smith’s Black Hawk seven-year-old Star Hawk.

Set to get the inside run from barrier one Star Hawk is after their third win on the trot, their most recent being a good effort over Tohunga in a 2800m Handicap at Canterbury on May 23, and will be ridden by Nathan Berry.

Other notable hopefuls include the Craig Ritchie-trained Roi D’Jeu in gate four who was last seen finishing fifth in the Winter Cup, Anthony Cummings’ up-and-coming Zabeel gelding Emeritus and the Con Karakatsanis-trained Reigning.

Drawn in barrier two with Glyn Schofield to ride the Choisir colt returns to Sydney after two runs in Brisbane including a brave eighth to the Moody-trained Brambles in the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) last Saturday.

“I thought it was an extremely good run in the Derby,” Karakatsanis said.

“It’s just a shame the weather came a day late.

“He’s a mudlark and loves the wet but the rain came after the Derby.

“He may not have had the most ability in a race like that but he tried his heart out and I know he can stay.

“The reason why I’m looking to run him (in the Stayers Cup) is that it’s hard to find any race over that sort of distance, and that’s what he is looking for.”
