2012 Eye Liner Stakes Nominations & Weights

This Saturday Ipswich Cup Day will continue the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival action with a crack day’s racing headlined by three Listed features including the Eye Liner Stakes 2012.

One of the key support races on the program this year’s $175,000 Listed City Of Ipswich Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) drew 21 nominations with the Tony Gollan-trained Listen Son, last seen finishing a disappointing 13th in the Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm over the weekend, the 59kg topweight.

The other best rated entries are then Kiwi galloper Jetset Lad and Pat Duff’s BRC Sprint placegetter Steel Zip who if accepted will carry 58.5kg.

Other notable entries include the QTC Cup runner-up Belltone, Rob Heathcote’s duo of Gundy Son and Funtantes, and the Con Karkatsanis-trained Riva De Lago.

Encosta De Lago four-year-old Riva De Lago ran a disappointing 11th when beaten 15 lengths in the Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm on June 2, the gelding looking to bounce back after failing to run on the Heavy (10) track that day.

“He just didn’t go a yard on the heavy track,” Karakatsanis said.

Karakatsanis was praying for better weather in Ipswich this Saturday rating Riva De Lago a good chance in the Eye Liner should the conditions suit based on their previous run when beating home Torio’s Quest at Scone on May 18.

“If it’s a bog track on Saturday he probably won’t go around but they are predicting a bit of sunshine,” he said.

“He’s got the ability to win a race like that.

“To be beating a horse like Torio’s Quest is not too bad at all.

“He’s done well up here (in Queensland) but he just hasn’t had much luck because he went around on a track that didn’t suit him last start.”

The day’s headline event is then the $200,000 Listed Ipswich Cup (2150m) where the likes of Ginga Dude who comes off an Eagle Farm Cup third, the Gai Waterhouse-trained Kinnersley and Shuffle The Cash will face off.
