Solzhenitsyn Is 2012 Strawberry Road Handicap Winner At Eagle Farm

The Listed Strawberry Road Handicap has been won by Solzhenitsyn at Eagle Farm Racecourse today June 9, 2012.

Solzhenitsyn won the race by a length and a quarter margin ahead of Firebolt, who finished second, and Playaction, who placed third.

The five-year-old gelding was the fourth emergency for the $1 million Stradbroke Handicap later today, however, failed to make the field.

Trainer Rob Heathcote was more than happy to pick up the win in the 2012 Strawberry Road Handicap in its place.

Heathcote did not expect Solzhenitsyn to be caught three wide at the tail end of the field as he was for the majority of the race.

The trainer was thrilled with how jockey Michael Rodd handled the ride.

“Look that’s why you put these guys one,” Heathcote said.

“Michael Rodd’s a Group 1 jockey and he knows the horse.

“There was probably a little too much pressure on.

“I didn’t think he’d be back that far but no he’s a very good horse this bloke”

“He looked strong on the line.

“He’s done it on a track that slow. He’s adaptable.”

Heathcote is yet to decide where next to send Solzhenitsyn, but is adamant he will make an appearance during the Melbourne Spring Carnival.

“I may tip him out now (or) I may go to the Tatts mile in two weeks but certainly the Melbourne Spring,” he said.

Rodd was surprised to find himself at the tail end of the 2012 Strawberry Handicap field, however, never lost faith in Solzhenitsyn.

“He began very well today and I thought I’d be in the first four but everyone else had different ideas and they went very quick and I had to go back,” Rodd said.

“He won pretty convincingly.

“He’s just pure class. Today was pretty ugly but he got the job done pretty well.”
