2012 Daybreak Lover Won By Mental – Race 3 Results

The Listed Daybreak Lover 2012 has been won by Mental today after he failed to make the field for the 2012 Stradbroke Handicap later in the day.

The three-year-old was the third emergency for the $1 million Stradbroke Handicap and was forced to accept instead for the 2012 Daybreak Lover.

Mental cruised to an almost three length victory over second place-getter Venture On and third place runner Double Impact.

Trainer Peter Snowden was optimistic about Mental’s future after the race.

“It’s probably a constellation prize and he’s a talented horse,” Snowden said.

“And if he didn’t make it this year into the Stradbroke then hopefully he won’t be too far away next year.

“He won like a good thing and that’s what I needed to see.”

Mental’s Stradbroke Handicap campaign ended last weekend when he finished an unlucky seventh behind Pear Tart in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas.

“We needed that run last week and we might have been in the Stradbroke,” Snowden said.

The trainer is already looking towards next year’s Stradbroke Handicap with the talented Lonhro gelding.

“He’ll go to the paddock now and spell and whether or not we go to the spring, we’ll think about where we go,” he said.

“Certainly I think he’s an ideal Stradbroke horse for next season so we’ll keep that in mind.

“Our plans even this far out will be based around what we do with him next year.”

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy also envisions a bright future for Mental.

“Hopefully there’s going to be better runs for him. He did it well today,” McEvoy said.

“I got out cleaner today and he was able to zip into a spot.

“His best trip is going to be six furlongs (1,200m) or seven furlongs (1,400m) but he did it over a mile today.”

Mental has now won six of his ten race starts and has earned more than $345,000 in prize money during his short career.
