A bumper day of racing will take place at Eagle Farm tomorrow and one of the most exciting events is the Group 1 $500,000 2012 Queensland Derby (2400m).
A full field of 18 horses will line up to compete in the three-year-old feature and it is two Peter Moody-trained chances heading the bookmaker.com.au market.
Brambles ($3.70) is chasing a third consecutive victory while Vatuvei ($4.60) signalled his potential as a stayer of the future when taking out the 2800-metre VRC St Leger in April.
Next best in the betting is South Australian Derby winner Zabeelionaire ($6.00) who is closely followed by last weekend’s Queensland Oaks winner Quintessential ($6.50).
Other horses set to race in the Queensland Derby include New Zealand filly Poste Restante ($18.00) and Schweppes Oaks winner Invest ($26.00).
The Queensland Derby appears to be a very open race but don’t worry if you can’t find a winner. The Races.com.au experts have been hard at work to develop our best tips ahead of the Group 1 feature.
#4 Vatuvei $4.60
Finished second over 2200 metres to Brambles last start when his stable mate led from start to finish.
It is unlikely Brambles will be able to do that again here and look for Vatuvei to come home strong as the distance increases to one more suitable.
The son of Reset has shown his ability to stay in the past and will be aided by the services of Moody stable rider Luke Nolen.
If the track gets into the slow or heavy range, Vatuvei becomes an even better chance as he has produced two dominant victories when running on heavy tracks.
The Moody pair should fight it out to the finish and nobody can deny Brambles’ impressive recent form.
A son of Savabeel, Brambles took out the Rough Habit Plate on May 12 before producing a dominant performance to win the Grand Prix Stakes by 3 ½ lengths.
Poste Restante faded to finish eighth in the Oaks last week after leading for the majority of the race but should be ridden more quietly from barrier six this weekend.
A very promising filly who came within a head of Brambles at the start of the carnival when third in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate.
#15 Invest $26.00
Update: Invest has been scratched from the 2012 Queensland Derby.
Struggled in the Oaks last weekend from a wide barrier but gets a better chance here from barrier four.
The Clarry Connors-trained three-year-old had previously been in great form when winning the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks and the Group 3 Roses where she beat eventual Queensland Oaks winner Quintessential.
