Queensland Derby 2012 – Final Field and Barrier Draw

A bumper day of racing is set to take place at Eagle Farm this weekend and one of the highlights is the Group 1 $500,000 2012 Queensland Derby (2400m).

Brambles is one of the top chances in Saturday's Queensland Derby

A full field of 18 horses have been named to contest the feature event including in-form Peter Moody-trained pair Brambles and Vatuvei.

Savabeel gelding Brambles has drawn barrier 13 and will be chasing a third consecutive victory after impressing at the Brisbane Carnival so far.

The talented three-year-old won the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate by a head and then dominated the entire race to take out the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes by 3 ½  lengths.

Second in the Grand Prix Stakes was stablemate Vatuvei who has received the “visitor’s” draw” with barrier 19.

The son of Reset is a genuine stayer having won at 2800 metres before in the Listed VRC St Leger and will be receive an advantage if the wet weather that occurred last week in Brisbane repeats itself this week.

From two starts on heavy tracks, Vatuvei has shown a remarkable ability to get through the ground with two dominant victories.

Receiving a far better draw in barrier nine is Zabeelionaire who like Brambles will be chasing a third straight win this weekend.

The Leon Corstens-trained colt won the Eastern Bridge Plate at Caulfield in April by 2 ½ lengths before taking out the Group 1 South Australian Derby in early May.

Receiving a poor draw in barrier 21 is New Zealand filly Quintessential who is backing up just seven days after taking out the Group 1 Queensland Oaks.

The John Sargent-trained horse received a far better draw on that day and was ridden to a convnicing victory by Damian Browne from the inside.

Fellow New Zealand filly Poste Restante is another backing up from the Queensland Oaks where she lead for most of the race before dropping off at the back end of the race to finish in eighth place.

The daughter of Postponed will be ridden by leading Queensland jockey Chris Munce from barrier six.

Other horses set to run in the Queensland Derby include Schweppes Oaks winner Invest and Queensland Oaks third place-getter Vittoria.
