Pear Tart Produces Upset Win in 2012 Queensland Guineas

Pear Tart has upset a quality field that included highly-rated gelding Mental to win the Group 2 2012 Queensland Guineas (1400m) at Eagle Farm today.

Paying $16.00, the Dehere filly surprised everyone including her trainer John Thompson after playing up in the float following her last-start victory at Eagle Farm on May 2.

Pear Tart caused an upset in the 2012 Queensland Guineas results

“Very promising filly, her preparation coming into this race was not good,”

“On the way home in the float she cut her head open terribly, got about 14 stitches above the eye.

“She missed good work but the last seven days she has really come on.”

It marks a third consecutive victory for the talented up-and-comer who relished the conditions of the heavy (8) track.

The promising three-year-old has cemented herself as an excellent wet-track runner and now boasts three wins from three starts on soft or heavy tracks.

She was ridden terrifically by jockey Jeff Lloyd who was confident after riding her in trackwork during the week.

“I got on this filly a week or so a go and said to John [Thompson], this filly has by far given me the best feel [of the Thompson horses].”

“Sure she was put in the deep end today. But because of what she has shown us at home, John took the chance and put her in here.

“She took it with ease.”

Race faovurite Mental got well back early and by the time they reached the final straight had far too much ground to make up and finished outside the placings.

Peter Snowden-trained colt Free Wheeling produced a strong showing to come second while Brisbane-based gelding Stradon finished third.
