Spear Chief Handicap 2012 – Final Field and Barrier Draw

Seventeen acceptances have been made for the Listed $80,000 2012 Spear Chief Handicap (1500m) which will take place as part of a bumper eight-race Eagle Farm program this Saturday.

Headlining the field is Chris Waller-trained gelding Firebolt who has had a promising build-up and will carry the topweight of 59kg.

The six-year-old has improved every race this preparation after beginning with a fourth in the JRA Plate before running third in the Lord Mayor’s Cup at Rosehill and runner-up in the Doomben event with the same name.

A son of Stravinsky, Firebolt is a highly experienced horse and from 38 starts has scored victory eight times and placed on another 11 occasions.

Peter Morgan-trained gelding Dusty Star struggled when seventh last start in the Group 3 BRC Sprint but will appreciate the drop back in class to Listed level.

Prior to his last-start, the General Nediym four-year-old produced two close runner-up finishes including the Listed Anniversary Vase at Caulfield on April 21.

Carry Me Bluey is another who failed to impress in the BRC Sprint but the Norm Hilton-trained gelding has an impressive resume that includes seven victories and 10 place-finishes from 23 career starts.

New Zealand mare St Germaine produced a solid effort last start when fourth in the Lord Mayor’s Cup and is another who brings a lot of experience into the race.

The John Sargent-trained five-year-old has started 29 times and from that has recorded four victories and placed another four times.

The Spear Chief Handicap will run as the second race on a bumper eight-race card that features one Group 1 race and a further five Group 2 events.

Highlighting the card is the the $400,000 Queensland Oaks but there are a number of exciting support events including the Eagle Farm Cup and Queensland Guineas.

Some wet weather has been predicted ahead of the weekend and if it eventuates could produce some difficult racing conditions as the Eagle Farm track struggles to hold water.

All the markets for Saturday’s feature meeting will be open on Thursday and the best place to back a winner is bookmaker.com.au.

Home of the $300 bonus bet, bookmaker.com.au is Australian owned and operated and offers a wide range of betting options.
