Mental Heads 2012 Queensland Guineas Field

In-form Peter Snowden-trained gelding Mental heads a full field of 18 three-year-old horses for the Group 2 $350,000 2012 Queensland Guineas (1400m) at Eagle Farm this weekend.

Mental heads into the Queensland Guineas in tremendous form

The son of Lohnro has been in sizzling form of late and will need to continue that this weekend in order to gain entry to Saturday week’s $1 million Stradbroke Handicap.

Despite sitting 45th on the order of entry, Mental is one of the favourites to win the Stradbroke and will gain qualification if he can win this weekend.

The talented youngster has drawn barrier two and will be chasing a third consecutive victory after backing up a dominant first-up win at Hawkesbury with a 1 1/2 length victory in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic.

His stablemate Free Wheeling will line up next to him in barrier three and the Ad Valorem colt exists as one of the biggest threats to the favourite.

Free Wheeling won the Hawkesbury Guineas by four lengths earlier this month and in his last start produced a tremendous effort against older horses when fourth to Tiger Tees in the BRC Sprint.

Peter Morgan-trained gelding Amah Rock gets a chance to exact revenge on Mental after finishing second in the Fred Best Classic.

The Fastnet Rock gelding has shown plenty of promise in his young career, winning three of eight starts and placing on another two occasions.

Queensland gelding Trump will appreciate the drop back in distance to 1400 metres after most recently finishing fifth in the Rough Habit Plate (2000m).

Prior to his last start, the Robert Heathcote-trained horse had been in solid form, placing second in a Listed event at Doomben before taking out the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1600m).

Other horses named in the Queensland Guineas field include in-form filly Pear Tart, Danny O’Brien-trained Shopaholic and promising Brisbane gelding Easy Running.
