The Verminator Tops Winter Cup 2012 Nominations

Group 1 winner The Verminator headlines a 14-horse list of nominations for the Listed $100,000 2012 Winter Cup (2400m) which will take place at Warwick Farm this Saturday.

The Verminator is one of the top nominations in Saturday's Winter Cup

But the Chris Waller-trained five-year-old will have to turn around his recent spell of bad form as he has not won since taking out the Group 1 Big 6 Metropolitan in October last year.

Prolific Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse has three nominations for the stayer’s event in Reuben Percival, Once Were Wild and Two For Tea.

Reuben Percival has been in excellent form of late, having finished top three in his last three starts including a three-length victory in the Richmond Club Stayers Final at Hawkesbury earlier this month.

Johannesburg mare Once Were Wild won the Group 1 AJC Oaks in 2010 but has been unable to record victory since the Group 2 Chairman’s Handicap in April last year.

The five-year-old produced an excellent effort to finish within a length of the winner when third in the Group 1 Sydney Cup in April but will need to turn around a last-start sixth in the WJ McKell Cup.

Ron Quinton-trained four-year-old has shown plenty of promise in 2012 but has been unable to take top honours despite some impressive runs.

From five starts this year, the daughter of Starcraft has produced two runner-up finishes and is yet to finish worse than fifth.

Four-year-old mare Mirjulisa Lass is another horse with Group 1 credentials and has begun to show promise with mid-field finishes in her past two starts after starting 2012 in horrible form.

In her first four starts this year the Gregory Hickman-trained four-year-old had a shocking run, finishing a best of 10th.

Other horses nominated for the Winter Cup include Graeme Rogerson and Lee Freedman-trained Bid Spotter, New Zealand gelding Roi D’Jeu and last-start winner Adroitly.
