Buffering to Carry Topweight in 2012 Stradbroke Handicap

Star Queensland sprinter Buffering is set to carry the topweight of 58kg into the 2012 Stradbroke Handicap following the injury incurred by two-time winner Black Piranha in Saturday’s Doomben 10,000.

Buffering will be forced to carry 58kg in the Stradbroke Handicap

Black Piranaha headed the weights for the $1 million feature race at 57.5kg which means Buffering’s weight will rise from 57kg to 58kg when the final field is named next week.

Racing regulations state that the topweight in Group 1 races must carry 58kg which is six kilograms heavier than the son of Mossman carried when he ran fourth in 2011.

It will be yet another opportunity for the talented four-year-old to claim an elusive Group 1 victory after placing behind some classy opponents in recent times including Black Caviar and Hay List.

Buffering made an oustanding return from the stone bruise injury that saw him withdrawn from the BTC Cup on Saturday when he produced a typically tough effort to finish runner-up to in-form filly Sea Siren.

The second Group 1 victory of the Winter Carnival has seen Sea Siren given a 1.5kg penalty meaning she will run at 54kg if she lines up to attempt the third leg of the Brisbane sprint treble.

But the penalty could mean the talented three-year-old won’t be given the opportunity and the decision will be made by owner Keith Biggs after she gallops next week.

Trainer John O’Shea said he would do all he could to convince the owner to allow her to start in the Stradbroke but ultimately it would be up to Biggs to make the final call.

The Fastnet Rock three-year-old currently sits as $5.50 bookmaker.com.au favourite in the pre-post betting market ahead of Buffering ($7.00), fellow three-year-old Mental ($7.50) and Tiger Tees ($10.00).

Lonhro gelding Mental blew the field away last start when winning the Group 3 Fred Best Classic but sits at 45th on the order of entry and has to win Saturday’s Queensland Guineas to gain Stradbroke qualification.
