Sea Siren Creates History to win 2012 Doomben 10,000

Sea Siren has created history by becoming the first three-year-old filly to win the Doomben 10,000 since the Group 1 event began in 1933.

Fresh off a win in the Group 1 BTC Cup, the talented John O’Shea-trained youngster went head to head with Queensland star Buffering in the final straight but had too much fuel in the tank and managed to finish half a length in front of her older rival.

With experienced jockey Jim Cassidy in the saddle, the Fastnet Rock three-year-old ran a similar race to the BTC Cup, sitting just off the lead.

As they hit the top of the straight she was half a length behind Buffering and the two were in a neck and neck battle but with 50 metres to go Sea Siren showed to much strength for Buffering who was returning from a stone bruise injury.

Trainer O’Shea was full of praise for his star and jockey Cassidy who has ridden the filly in her last four starts.

“It’s a wonderful achievement for a wonderful filly,” O’Shea said.

“Full credit to Jimmy…it was a very, very good run and a very good ride.”

“She’s got an imposing record, she beat a great horse like Buffering who’s been punching around with Black Caviar and the like in Melbourne.”

Cassidy was also thrilled with the horse who delivered him his second winning ride in the feature event.

“Great effort, broke a record, no filly’s ever won it,” Cassidy said.

“She’s such a push-button filly. She’s got a few hurdles to climb but she’s going to go a long way this filly.”

“She’s a real little pro.”

The win takes Sea Siren’s record to an impressive five wins from seven starts and she has already collected more than $850,000 in prize money.

It was an excellent effort from second place Buffering who missed work in the lead up due to the stone bruise injury that saw him withdrawn from the BTC Cup.

Tony Gollan-trained gelding Temple Of Boom came home behind the pair to finish in third place.
