Huge Outsider Fantastic Blue Wins 2012 Premier’s Cup

An outsider paying $51.00 has beaten home a host of more fancied rivals to win the Group 3 $125,000 2012 Premier’s Cup (2200m) at Doomben today.

With boom young jockey Timothy Bell in the saddle, Fantastic Blue stormed home down the middle of the track to beat the in-form Dance With Her by a bob of the head.

Fantastic Blue has caused a huge upset to win the 2012 Premier's Cup

It was a tremendous ride from Bell who is riding as a freelance jockey after parting ways with the Patinack Farm stable earlier this year.

Bell said he always thought the horse was a chance as he had previously won twice from two attempts at the distance.

Trainer Paul Nolan was confident going into the race and described the son of Danehill Dancer as the “best horse” he has trained.

“He’s the best horse I’ve ever had,” Nolan said.

After the impressive run Nolan is now considering entering the gelding in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup which will be held on June 9 at Eagle Farm.

“My main ambition was to win the Brisbane Cup so I suppose I’ve got to have a crack at it now,” Nolan said.

“He’s got to be a hope. He’s a good horse to train, he’s never worked better [than] this week.”

Fantastic Blue now has a record of 11 wins from 45 starts with today’s Group 3 win by far the highlight of the five-year-old’s career.

Dance With Her was in a good position heading towards the line to record a third consecutive victory before Fantastic Blue cam flying home and had to settle with second.

Experienced gelding Ironstein produced another strong effort after his second in the Chairman’s Handicap to take third place.
