Brambles Takes Out Grand Prix Stakes 2012

Peter Moody-trained gelding Brambles has signalled himself as a genuine Queensland Derby contender after producing a dominant win in the Group 3 2012 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) at Doomben today.

The Savabeel three-year-old shot out of the gates setting the pace for the rest of the field and with 700 metres to go stood five lengths in front of his closest rival.

Brambles is a Queensland Derby contender after winning the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes

With Brad Rawiller on board, the tempo never let up and he galloped away to take top honours by three lengths in front of fellow Moody-trained horse Vatuvei and New Zealand gelding Red Shift.

It was a daring ride from Rawiller who was happy to back his horse’s ability to see out the race in his first test at the distance.

“It wasn’t necessarily a straight out plan but I thought it was a good chance we could out run them with the barrier we had (7),” Rawiller said.

“To his credit we didn’t just sit there…he was just too good.

“Thankfully he stayed on strong which he did last start.”

It marks the second straight Group level win for the talented three-year-old who also finished at the front of field earlier this month in the Rough Habit Plate.

His ability to finish off the race in his first step up to 2200 metres holds him in good stead ahead of the Queensland Derby (2400m) which will be held at Eagle Farm on June 9.

The second-placed Vatuvei also signalled his Derby claims and previous results, including a win over 2800 metres in the VRC St Leger, suggest the son of Reset will appreciate the extra distance in the Queensland Derby.

The Grand Prix Stakes has provided plenty of insight into these promising three-year-olds ahead of the Queensland Derby and the best betting onthe Group 1 feature will be found at
