Boban Sprints Home to Win The Phoenix 2012

Anthony Freedman-trained colt Boban has shown a terrific turn of foot to come from second last at the final turn and sprint home to take out the Listed $100,000 2012 The Phoenix at Doomben today.

Jockey Hugh Bowman followed the trainer’s plans to perfection, allowing the horse to switch off and sit behind the field before charging home to finish in front of short-priced favourite Hoss Amor and Regular.

Speaking on behalf of the Freedman stables, foreman Ash Yargi said the likely next target would be the Group 1 TJ Smith Plate on June 9 after capitalising on his potential today.

“He went to sleep which is a good thing. That’s why he had that good turn of foot,” Yargi said.

“We know the horse has got a lot of ability, it’s just a matter of him settling.”

The Morninton-based colt’s inconsistent temperament has been evident throughout his career with his record standing at three back-field finishes and two impressive wins.

Hugh Bowman was riding the talented son of Bernardini for the first time and was happy to follow the trainer’s instructions.

“I was pretty confident. I haven’t ridden the horse [before] but Anthony assured me he’s got ability,” Bowman said.

“Inside the 350 it was just a case of getting room. I was chomping all over their heels and he reeled them in a matter of strides.”

Bowman said Boban would be more suited to the Eagle Farm track in the TJ Smith and will be tough to be beat in the feature two-year-old event.

Hoss Amor was odds-on $2.00 favourite heading into the race and held a solid position before the unpredictable Boban showed his tremendous speed.
