Premier’s Cup 2012 Betting Preview & Tips

The 2012 Premier’s Cup will play out as a nice Brisbane Cup guide at Doomben Racecourse on Saturday, and below the team has made our insider tips on the handicap clash public knowledge.

Attracting a big field of stayers with 16 starters plus two emergencies this year’s edition of the $125,000 Group 3 Channel Seven Premier’s Cup (2200m) is due to jump at 3:20pm as Doomben Race 6.

There has been little change in the Premier’s Cup odds at our preferred online sportsbook, the Chris Waller-trained Wazn the steady $4 favourite after their eye-catching second to Kinnersley in the Listed Lord Mayor’s Cup (2000m) at Rosehill last time out.

Other gallopers the bookies are rating as top chances include Anthony Freedman’s second emergency Fruehling ($4.80) who won over 2000m at Werribee two back before their second over 2200m on a Heavy (8) Gold Coast track, and Fruehling’s last-start conqueror Shamardashing ($5) from the Gold Coast stables of John Thompson.

There’s also the in-form Mornington mare Dance With Her ($7) out for her third stakes win on the trot, early market mover Ironstein ($7) with the 58kg top weight to overcome, and known mudlark Absolutely ($8) whose sole career win from 14 start to date was in the 2011 AJC Oaks on a Heavy (10) Randwick track.

Gerald Ryan’s Zabeel six-year-old Ironstein is in fact the only early Premier’s Cup betting market mover at this stage having firmed in from their opening price of $7.50, the gelding coming off a good second to Hume in the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2000m) at the track on May 12.

That’s what the Premier’s Cup betting markets have to say, but what about the tipsters at

We’ve done the hard work for our readers and gone over the race field and form guide to provide you with our exclusive Premier’s Cup 2012 betting tips.

Doomben Race 6 Betting – Premier’s Cup Tips

To Win

#3 Larry’s Never Late ($12)

Were disappointing last time out at Caulfield but that was with 61kg on their back, getting back up in distance can be a competitive force here, good third in the JRA Plate over 2000m with 57kg two back and they get this weight again with Dwayne Dunn to ride, yet to finish out of the money on the track (3-0-1-2), and good form over the distance (3-1-0-1).

To Place

#4 Dance With Her ($7)

Comes off back-to-back Listed wins firstly in the Warrnambool Cup over 2350m on a Heavy track then in the Centaurea Stakes (2005m) on Dead ground, drops from 59kg to 56kg which is a big advantage, right form, right distance, just needs to handle her first look at Doomben, best for a place

#6 Wazn ($4)

Good in Sydney, if they bring that form to Brisbane look out locals, Corey Brown rides for the first time and they see the track and distance for the first time as well, but boast a good 70% win and place rate, handle first or heavy tracks and look to be improving with each run, they also won the Australia Day Cup over 2400m in January

#7 Shamardashing ($5)

Out for her third on the trot after two wins on Heavy Queensland tracks over 2050m at Doomben and then 2200m at the Gold Coast, she has also won three times on Good ground, but never on Dead to Slow, so if the rain comes down this one (with Chris Munce riding) is the one to get on

Forget Me

#1 Ironstein ($7)

Money for the Chairman’s runner-up but they rise in the weights, give weight away and could be on a wet track where that won’t be a good thing, do have winning form over the distance but just don’t think they can do it with the weight (58kg) on a possible soft track from the inside alley

Roughies We Like

#11 Viking Hero ($21)

Classy Flemington galloper may only have two wins from 31 starts to their name but don’t discount for a place, ran second over this distance in the Hobart Cup back in Feb, also finished a good third in the Pakenham Cup (1750m) and second in the Easter Cup (2000m), didn’t love the wet at the Gold Coast last time out but latest update is for slow at worst at Doomben so if it stays out of the Heavy range watch this one

#5 Hume ($21

Really juicy price on Brian Smith’s Eagle Farm galloper, can be hit and miss but they were a definite hit winning the Chairman’s as a $41 roughie two weeks back at Doomben, they like Doomben (7-3-2-0) and have a good record over this distance (2-1-0), best roughie for us even with the draw (18)
