Wazn Heads 2012 Premier’s Cup Odds

Chris Waller’s consistent galloper Wazn has opened top of the Premier’s Cup 2012 odds to win this Saturday’s handicap clash on Doomben 10,000 Day.

Corey Brown

Corey Brown has the ride on 2012 Premier's Cup favourite Wazn this weekend

Winner of the Australia Day Cup during the summer the Whipper five-year-old has had two runs this time in when a good fourth to Star Of Octagonal in the Listed Hawkesbury Rowley Mile (1600m) followed by their second to Kinnersley in the Listed Lord Mayor’s Cup (2000m) at Rosehill on May 12.

They go third-up into the $125,000 Group 3 Channel Seven Premier’s Cup (2200m) at Doomben Racecourse on Saturday, Wazn drawn in barrier 13 coming into 11 if the two emergencies don’t gain a start.

Due to be ridden by Corey Brown for the first time the European import also makes their Brisbane debut on Saturday but the bookies have them as the horse to beat with Wazn the current $4 favourite at bookmaker.com.au.

In a relatively open Premier’s Cup betting market this year there are five other single-figure chances with:

  • #18 Fruehling ($4.80) – Needs two scratchings to get a run as the second emergency but if they start they are a sure fighter from the gate (5), Anthony Freedman has them spot on for this with two first-up wins followed by a good second to Shamardashing on a Heavy (8) Gold Coast course last time out. Get a Start Get on to Place.
  • #7 Shamardashing ($5) – Really nice chance on the minimum, has the Chris Munce factor but wide draw (15), if the rain comes they will need to be out a bit and as they come off back-to-back Queensland wins on Heavy tracks, they are the one to beat in the wet. Rain Comes Down These Odds Come In.
  • #4 Dance With Her ($7) – Out for their third on the trot, on 56kg but they drop back from the 59kg they carried to victory over 2005 at Morphettville in a black Type on May 12, before that they scored a good victory in the Warrnambool Cup (2350m) on a Heavy (8) track so another that will thrive if the heaven’s open up. Distance, Form and Conditions Say Yes.
  • #1 Ironstein ($7.50) – Needs to overcome the 58kg topweight and could get caught up on the rails from barrier one but have been racing well of late including their last-start second to Hume in the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap at this track and distance. Give Too Much Weight Away for the Win.
