Santa Fe Sun’s 2012 TJ Smith Test

The second at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday is shaping up as a telling trial for the upcoming TJ Smith 2012 in Brisbane with the two top rated youngsters in the field vying for a trip up to the sunshine state for the classic.

Yesterday the Races.com.au team reported that Gai Waterhouse was using the $70,000 Power Access 2YO Plate (1200m) as a lead-up run into the $500,000 Group 1 The TJ Smith (1600m) at Eagle Farm on Stradbroke Handicap Day June 9 for her unbeaten Haradasun gelding Kabayan.

After a winning debut at Wyong on May 10 Kabayan is rated an $11 chance in the futures TJ Smith odds at bookmaker.com.au which are led by Kelso Wood’s firing-on-all-cylinders colt Sizzling ($2.60).

Much further down The TJ Smith betting markets punters can find $41 roughie Santa Fe Sun who is set to take Kabayan on at Rosehill on Saturday.

Also a winner on debut having put an impressive three and a half lengths on their closest rival over 1000m at Muswellbrook on May 4, the Gerald Ryan-trained colt is another son of Aussie sire Haradasun.

“I know it’s not city form but he was way too good for them,” Ryan said of Santa Fe Sun’s victory.

Jockey Josh Parr retains the ride on Santa Fe Sun for Saturday, the duo drawn in barrier nine, two inside of Kabayan.

Ryan said that Santa Fe Sun was set for improvement and rated them as not far off from his smart Snitzel colt Dances On Stars who finished a length away third to Sizzling in the Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) in Doomben.

“There’s not much between him and Dances On Stars,” he said.

“He’s come on since his debut and I’m expecting him to run very well on Saturday.

“A win would see him head north for the T J (Smith).

“He’s by Haradasun and should appreciate further than Saturday’s race so if he gets there (Queensland) he’ll be a big chance.”

As for Kabayan Ryan pointed at Santa Fe Sun’s first official trial in April over 734m at Ranwick when they finished a length and a half away third to Saturday’s top pick.

“Sante Fe Sun ran third to him and I reckon we could have got closer,” Ryan said.
