Excellantes Heads 2012 Chief De Beers Handicap Betting

In-form Queensland gelding Excellantes is favourite to record a second straight victory when he lines up in Saturday’s Listed $80,000 2012 Chief De Beers Handicap (1110m).

Currently paying $3.30 at bookmaker.com.au, the Robert Heathcote-trained four-year-old was highly impressive last start when winning the Westfield Chermisde Handicap by three lengths.

The winner of six of 18 starts has drawn favourably in barrier five and also has the advantage of having talented New Zealand jockey James McDonald on board.

He is one of many in-form sprinters in the 14-horse field with Seek And Find and Nuptse set to again go head-to-head after finishing first and second respectively in the Doomben Dash last start.

Kelso Wood-trained Seek And Find ($5.50) has drawn the inside barrier while Nuptse ($6.00) will come from barrier eight with experienced Queensland rider Chris Munce in the saddle.

Next best in the betting is Barry Baldwin-trained four-year-old Havatryst ($6.50) who will be running first-up after last being seen winning the Woolworths Handicap at Doomben on February 4.

The gelding has a solid record of six wins from 14 starts and has scored victory when resuming from a spell on two previous occasions.

Only one other horse comes in under $10.00 with Fastnet Rock four-year-old Rocker paying $9.00 in what will be his first step up to Listed level.

The Kelly Schweida-trained horse has won five times from eight starts and will be ridden by Glen Colless out of barrier two this weekend.

Top weight Border Rebel has finished at the back of the field in his two most recent starts but the Johannseburg six-year-old has a good career record and provides value for the punters at $17.00.

The Chief De Beers Handicap will jump at 4:40pm as the last race on the action-packed Doomben card that features the Group 1 Doomben 10,000.

Markets are now available on all the Doomben feature races this weekend so head to bookmaker.com.au to back a winner.
