The Phoenix 2012 Field Headed by Hoss Amor

Promising John O’Shea-trained filly Hoss Amor has drawn a favourable barrier three position for Saturday’s Listed $100,000 2012 Phoenix (1350m) at Doomben Racecourse.

The talented two-year-old was impressive when finishing runner-up in her first-up start in the Listed Hampden Stakes and looks in a good position to go one better this weekend with boom New Zealand jockey James McDonald on board.

She will get a good look at one of her main rivals Choice Bro who will come from one gate outside her in barrier four.

The New Zealand colt was solid when running fourth in his first run on Australian soil in the Hampden Stakes and boasts a quality early career record.

A winner of three of seven starts, the son of Choisir tasted Group 1 success earlier this year when winning the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes.

Fellow Phoenix starter Saturn Rock is also New Zealand-based and the filly hit the ground running to finish third in the Hampden Stakes in her first Brisbane hit-out.

Drawing barrier eight, the Fastnet Rock two-year-old has won once from four starts but has placed on the three other occasions.

Gold Coast-based gelding Courtz Boy is chasing a third consecutive victory after performing well in lesser events at Ipswich and the Gold Coast recently.

The Helen Page-trained horse will run from the inside barrier with experienced Queensland rider Jim Byrne in the saddle.

He is joined in the race by fellow last-start winners Regular and Hi Son who are relatively unknown candidates with just two career outings to their names.

The Phoenix will run as the third race on an exciting eight-race Doomben card that is highlighted by the Group 1 $650,000 Doomben 10,000.
