Plenty of Speed in 2012 Chief De Beers Handicap Field

Another action-packed day of racing will take place at Doomben this weekend and one of the most exciting support races to the Doomben 10,000 will be the 2012 Chief De Beers Handicap (1100m).

Fourteen horses have been named in the final field to contest the $80,000 Listed event and there is no shortage of speed.

Highly impressive Robert Heathcote-trained gelding Excellantes was dominant last start when winning the Westfield Chermside Handicap by three lengths and has drawn a plum barrier five position as he attempts to score a second consecutive victory.

Fellow last-start winner Seek And Find bolted out of the gates to take top honours in the Doomben Dash and he has drawn the inside barrier for what will be his first start at Listed level.

Seek And Find was challenged in the Doomben Dash by runner-up Nuptse and they get the chance to again go head to head this weekend with Nuptse set to jump from barrier eight.

Sue Grills-trained six-year-old Border Rebel has been in poor form of late but has a chance to get back in the winners circle this weekend.

The winner of 14 of 28 starts has been allocated the top weight of 59kg but will be advantaged if the rain falls as predicted this weekend.

A son of Johannesburg, Border Rebel has produced four victories from five starts when running on slow or heavy tracks.

Veteran gelding Ghetto Blaster is a Group level winner but faces a tough task to end his two-year winless drought this weekend.

The Gillian Heinrich-trained eight-year-old will be forced to carry 58kg from the outside barrier and struggled first-up when 12th at Doomben last weekend.

The Chief De Beers Handicap will jump at 4:40pm on Saturday as the last race of the day on an exciting eight-race card.
