2012 Grand Prix Stakes Field & Barriers Released

Racing Queensland has today released the final fields and barriers for all the Doomben 10,000 Day races this weekend including those for the Grand Prix Stakes 2012.

Brambles (centre) is one of three 2012 Grand Prix Stakes hopefuls for trainer Peter Moody

Attracting a full field of 16 starters plus one emergency the $150,000 Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) is scheduled to run as Doomben Race 5 at 2:40pm.

The 2012 Grand Prix Stakes is shaping up as a crack showdown between some of the top fancies heading into the $500,000 Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday June 9 for Stradbroke Handicap Day.

Latest Queensland Derby odds at bookmaker.com.au are led by SA Derby winner Zabeelionaire ($3.50), and while they aren’t in the Grand Prix Stakes field on Saturday the $5.50 second favourite Soros is.

Drawn ideally in barrier four with Vlad Duric engaged for the ride Peter Moody’s Lonhro colt comes off their second career win from seven starts having beaten home Durnford over 2000m at Flemington on May 5.

Saturday will be their first look at the 2200m and a Queensland track but their last start effort and class are likely to see them open as one of the top fancies.

Soros is actually one of three Queensland Derby-bound gallopers for Moody that will face off in the Grand Prix Stakes along with Vatuvei and Brambles who have drawn barriers eight and seven respectively.

Luke Nolen’s mount Vatuvei is currently a $9 chance for the Derby and was last seen running away to win the Listed VRC St Leger (2800m) at Flemington on a Heavy (8) track back on Anzac Day.

Savabeel gelding Brambles meanwhile will be ridden by Brad Rawiller on Saturday, Rawiller aboard on May 12 when they scored a tight victory in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) at Doomben.

Aside from Moody’s exciting trio Sydney trainer Peter Snowden is also preparing to saddle up a last-start winner in the Grand Prix this year with Eurayle.

Drawn on the rails in barrier one with Kerrin McEvoy booked for the ride Euryale comes off a good win over Lucripetous in an 1800m Benchmark 72 at Rosehill on May 12.

Other notable Grand Prix Stakes hopefuls include the Chris Waller-trained improver Lucripetous, Snowden’s Lonhro filly Angelus out to improve on her ninth in The Roses last Saturday, and the John Thompson-trained Isopach who should hit form getting up to this distance.
