Top Sydney trainer Chris Waller is considering a trip up to Queensland with his quality mare Red Tracer where she could be given the chance to mix it with the best in the lucrative Stradbroke Handicap 2012 on June 9.
The richest race of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, the $1 million Group 1 AAMI Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) is this year shaping up as a clash of the three-year-olds with the likes of the Peter Snowden-trained Mental ($7), Tim Martin’s Gosford – Scone Guineas winner Pampelonne ($8) and John O’Shea’s BTC Cup champ Sea Siren ($8) dominating the early bookmaker.com.au markets.
Further down the Stradbroke Handicap odds at a much juicer $31 is then four-year-old Dane Shadow mare Red Tracer who was last seen finishing fifth to superstar More Joyous in the Group 1 Queen of the Turf Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on April 7.
Winner of the Group 3 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) earlier in the season when relishing the muddy conditions in Sydney, Red Tracer is yet to race outside of New South Wales but could be given that chance this prep.
Third to Secret Admirer in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) last spring in Sydney, Red Tracer showed Waller she was ready to hit the turf again with a smart winning barrier trial over 1000m at Hawkesbury on Monday.
She is a chance to run in an 1100m open handicap at Rosehill on Saturday where she would be the top weight.
Originally Waller planned to take her to Brisbane for the $200,000 Group 2 Dane Ripper Quality (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 2 followed by the $500,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) for the fillies and mares on June 23, but he believes this year is a winnable Stradbroke.
“The original plan was to run her in the Dane Ripper Stakes and then the Tattersall’s Tiara,” he said.
“The thinking is the field might be a bit weaker this year and we’d like to have a crack at the Stradbroke if it’s possible.”
An updated Stradbroke Handicap order of entry was released by Racing Queensland on Monday with Red Tracer guaranteed a spot in the capacity 18-starter plus 5-emergency field sitting 11th on the ballot.
She is weighted on 53kg, 2.5kg above the 50.5kg minimum.
Mental (45th) and Pampelonne (43rd) meanwhile must fight their way into the field between now and then if the top fancies are to feature on the day.
