Two of the top chances heading into next month’s Queensland Derby will have their next run on Doomben 10,000 Day with premier Victorian trainer Peter Moody nominating for both Soros and Vatuvei in the 2012 Grand Prix Stakes.
One of three Group races on the program for Saturday the $150,000 Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) is a set weights clash for three-year-olds and has attracted a total of 22 nominations this year.
Leading the early entries is the Moody-trained duo of Soros and Vatuvei who are both heading towards a run in the $500,000 Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) at Eagle Farm on Stradbroke Handicap Day, June 9.
Latest Queensland Derby odds at bookmaker.com.au are led by SA Derby winner Zabeelionaire at $3.50 after connections confirmed they would press onto the classic.
Occupying the second line of Queensland Derby betting is then Lonhro colt Soros at $5.50.
Soros became a dual winner from seven starts last time out when beating a quality field over 2000m at Flemington on May 5.
Their stablemate Vatuvei is also a single-figure chance in the Queensland Derby markets paying $9 for an upset.
The Reset gelding also comes off a last start win when relishing the Heavy (8) track at Flemington back on Anzac Day to score a tidy win in the Listed VRC St Leger (2800m).
Moody could have as many as three horses running in the Grand Prix Stakes on Saturday with Brambles also in the mix.
A $15 chance for the QLD Derby, the son of Savabeel improved on their recent Gunsynd Classic third to hold on in a tight finish and salute in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) at Doomben on May 12, making them a top chance in Saturday’s race.
Other notable Queensland Derby hopefuls also nominated for the Grand Prix Stakes on Saturday include the improving Chris Waller-trained Lucripetous ($12), Rough Habit Plate fourth placegetter Isopach ($15), and Kiwi galloper Nashville ($21) out to improve on their distant 13th in the Rough Habit.
