Chief De Beers Handicap 2012 Nominations Released

Another bumper day of racing will take place at Doomben Racecourse this weekend and one of the key support races for the feature Doomben 10,000 is the 2012 Chief De Beers Handicap (1100m).

Fifteen horses have been nominated to contest the $80,000 Listed event including Robert Heathcote-trained gelding Excellantes who is fresh off an impressive last-start victory.

Liston Son (inside) and Excellantes

Excellantes (Pink & Black Checkers) is one of the top nominations for the Chief De Beers Handicap

The four-year-old produced a dominant display to win the Westfield Chermside Handicap by three lengths on May 12 but faces a far tougher task this weekend against the likes of Gundy Son and Border Rebel.

A half brother to Excellantes, Gundy Son won the 2011 Chief De Beers Handicap but will have to turn around some recent poor form with that race serving as his most recent victory.

Border Rebel has also struggled of late, finishing at the back of the field in his last two starts, but the Johannesburg gelding has an impressive career record.

Trained by Sue Grills, the six-year-old has won 14 times from 28 starts and has collected more than $500,000 in prize money.

There is set to be plenty of speed in the race with a number of horses who like to get to the front early including Brian Wakefield-trained mare Nuptse.

The four-year-old speedster was impressive when finishing second in her first-up effort in the Doomben Dash on May 12 and gets a great opportunity to build on her career record of four wins and three minor placings from 11 starts.

Seek And Find beat Nuptse in the Doomben Dash and the Kelso Wood-trained gelding has also been nominated for Saturday’s sprint.

The five-year-old is a consistent performer and has won nine times and place on another seven occasions from 22 outings.

Other horses included in nominations for the Chief De Beers Handicap three-time Group level winner Montana Flyer and experienced gelding Ghetto Blaster.
