Quintessential Catches Eye on Way to Queensland Oaks 2012

New Zealand filly Quintessential ran the perfect 2012 Queensland Oaks trial at Doomben over the weekend, John Sargent’s Fast ‘n’ Famous three-year-old catching the eye when fourth in The Roses.

A traditional Queensland Oaks lead-up the $175,000 Group 3 The Roses (2000m) was run and won on Saturday with the Clarry Conners-trained Invest taking out first prize.

Only two fillies in history have won the Roses – Oaks double however, including Kiwi Scarlett Lady last Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, and there are doubts Invest will become the third this year.

In a tight finish on Saturday the Peter Mertens-ridden winner held on to defeat New Zealand Oaks winner Miss Artistic by just a long neck with Chris Waller’s Gold Coast Bracelet champion Scorpio Queen finishing off the trifecta a further half length away.

But it was fourth placed Quintessential crossing a length off the winner who ran particularly well.

Having run third to Miss Artistic in the Group 1 NZ Oaks (2400m) three starts back, Quintessential was ridden by Damien Browne for the first time on Saturday and he was full of praise post-race.

“It’s almost impossible for a filly to come from where she was so far back and sustain the run to the line,” he said.

“It was a huge run, a terrific lead-up to the Oaks.”

The $400,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) runs at Eagle Farm on June 2 and early betting markets are led by Saturday’s The Roses trio with the Miss Artistic, Scorpio Queen and Invest installed as equal $5.50 favourites.

In a tight market Gerald Ryan’s Sydney filly Angel Of Mercy follows on $6 after running sixth in The Roses, while another New Zealander Poste Restante and also Quintessential then pay around $6.50.

Fourth in the NZ Oaks, Postponed filly Poste Restante didn’t go via the traditional The Roses lead-up and was last seen running a close third to Brambles in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) at Doomben on May 12 when ridden by Chris Munce for their Australian debut.

Munce also rode Shaune Ritchie’s Miss Artistic for their The Roses second on Saturday.
