Adroitly Wins McKell Cup 2012 – Brisbane Cup Next?

Peter Snowden’s improving four-year-old Adroitly relished getting back up to their preferred distance on Sunday winning the 2012 McKell Cup on a rapidly deteriorating Royal Randwick track and could now be bound for the Brisbane Cup 2012in Queensland.

Peter Snowden could send Adroitly to Queensland for the 2012 Brisbane Cup

The Octagonal gelding improved leaps and bounds on their four previously disappointing runs this time in to beat home a quality field in the $100,000 Listed WJ McKell Cup (2400m) with Kerrin McEvoy aboard.

On the line the $12 shot had three quarters of a length to spare over the John O’Shea-trained Legsman ($11) while Gai Waterhouse’s Reuben Percival ($5.50) finished off the McKell Cup trifecta a further one and a quarter lengths away in third.

Waterhouse’s $2.30 race favourite Western Symbol failed to handle the softer track, which was downgraded to a Slow (6) for Race 5 before eventually getting to a Heavy (8) for Race 7, and only managed to finish three and a half lengths off the winner in fourth.

After finding themselves at the back of the pack Adroitly did well to settle and come home hard when needed in a run that impressed McEvoy.

“The speed was genuine all the way through and that really helped him,” the jockey said.

“He likes to be out and running.”

Adroitly has now won five of their 20 career starts for $228,905 in prize money, their most recent win before Sunday being a bit seven and a half length romp over Diamond Jim at Canterbury over 2800m back in September.

The galloper is proving to be a valuable off-season stayer among Snowden’s stable, as explained by foreman Brad Widdup.

“We kept a few horses back and they are starting to win which is good,” Widdup said.

“There’s Tunes, this bloke and Yulalona is coming back.

“They are handy horses to have around this time of the year over these sorts of distances.”

Viscount three-year-old Tunes recently won at Warwick Farm over 2400m while Summer Cup winner Yulalona hasn’t raced since their good second to Wazn on a Heavy Warwick Farm track in the Australia Day Cup (2400m).

Following their McKell Cup performance on the weekend Adroitly could now be sent up to the sunshine state for the end of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival targeting the $300,000 Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) at Eagle Farm on Stradbroke Handicap Day, June 9.

Another option is to keep them in Sydney, with a decision relying on the weather in both states with Adroitly a known mudlark.

“Peter (Snowden) might send him up to Brisbane for the Brisbane Cup or there is a two-mile race here coming up (in Sydney),” Widdup said.

“It all depends on what the weather does.

“If it is raining in Brisbane that could help him because he loves the wet.”
