Solzhenitsyn Wins 2012 Lord Mayor’s Cup

Brisbane gelding Solzhenitsyn has continued his excellent run of form to win the Group 3 2012 Lord Mayor’s Cup (1600m) at Doomben today.

Stepping up to Group level for the first time, the Robert Heathcote-trained five-year-old had plenty of doubters this week as to whether he was up to class but proved he was more than able as he skipped away for a 1.5 length win ahead of Firebolt and Ginga Dude.

The son of St Petersburg got away quickly out of barrier three and shot to the lead early and that is where he stayed.

With local jockey Michael Rodd on board he was pushed early by outsider Gathering but Rodd kept his composure and on the final straight with the challengers coming hard the New Zealand-bred horse showed tremendous strength to kick away and win in convincing fashion.

Trainer Heathcote rated his other runner Fillydelphia a better chance leading into the race but was pleased with how he was able to step up and record a second straight victory.

“I’ve always like him and I’ve always known there was a good race in him,” Heathcote said.

“He’s beaten some well-proven horses that have won near a million dollars and he’s on his way up.

“Taking that step from restricted grade up to this level and he’s done it in style and let me say what a lovely ride from Michael.”

Solzhenitsyn now has eight wins from 20 starts and today’s victory takes his career prize pool to nearly $200,000.
