Sizzling Flies Home to Win Champagne Classic 2012

Race favourite Sizzling has signalled his class in today’s 2012 Champagne Classic (1200m), producing a flying sprint finish to take top honours in the $175,000 Group 3 event.

The Kelso Wood-trained colt got out of the gates slightly better than his typically sluggish fashion but was giving the leaders six lengths as they approached the final bend.

Ridden by experienced Queensland jockey Chris Munce, the Snitzel two-year-old was able to move to the outside and then showed tremendous speed to run down Academus and Dances On Stars and win by a head at the post.

It marks the second straight win for Sizzling who won the Listed Ken Russell Memorial Classic two weeks ago by 4.5 lengths.

Munce was pleased with the improvement of the talented Brisbane-based horse who is likely to start as favourite in next month’s Group 1 TJ Smith Plate.

“Today was alot more encouraging out of the barriers and believe it or not I think he’s still learning,” Munce said.

“I think he’s still putting it together.”

The promising colt’s record now stands at three wins from six starts and he has collected more than $250,000 in prize money.

Next up for Sizzling will be the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes on June 2 before contesting the feature two-year-old race of the winter on June 9, the Group 1 $500,000 TJ Smith Plate.

The extra distance of the TJ Smith (1600m) is likely to suit the boom youngster who has finished strongly despite slow starts in his last two races.

Gerald Ryan-trained Dances On Stars lead from the front and produced a tough effort to hang on and finish in third place.
