Star Of Octagonal Ready for Weighty 2012 Scone Cup

Todd Howlett-trained gelding Star Of Octagonal heads into today’s Listed $180,000 2012 Scone Cup (1600m) in sensational form after winning the Rowley Mile at Hawkesbury last start.

The Octagonal five-year-old has won twice and placed four times from six starts in 2012 with one highlight coming in the form of a runner-up finish to Niagara in the Group 2 Ajax Stakes.

One obstacle he will have to overcome is the the top weight of 58kg which is the heaviest weight he has carried in his entire 20-start career.

Veteran jockey Robert Thompson has ridden Star Of Octagonal in his last six starts and he will again be on board for today’s feature race.

Thompson said the gelding had trained on well since the Rowley Mile and is confident he will again produce a good performance.

“I’m sure he’ll run a very good race,” he said.

The 54-year-old rider is chasing a second Scone Cup win after riding Drogheda to victory in 1997.

Star Of Octagonal is currently second favourite ($4.20) at bookmaker.com.au to score a second consecutive victory while John O’Shea-trained Lightinthenite is a $2.90 favourite.

The talented four-year-old presents the biggest obstacle for Star Of Octagonal and will carry the minimum weight of 54.5kg.

The lightly-raced gelding has been impressive so far in his young career, winning five of nine starts and is coming off a first-up victory over Skyerush at Randwick in late April.

A Son Of Galilelo, Lightinthenite has drawn one barrier inside (9) Star Of Octagonal and will benefit from having boom New Zealand jockey James McDonald in the saddle.

Other horses set to line up in today’s Scone Cup include 2011 South Australian Derby winner Shadows In The Sun and Peter Snowden-trained Raspberries.
