Doomben Cup Day 2012 Tips & Betting Guide

The Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival continues this Saturday with a quality eight race program, including the latest Group 1 event of the festival, and below the crew have all the best 2012 Doomben Cup Day betting tips and selections.

Manighar is the team's tip to win the 2012 Doomben Cup

Racing at Doomben is set to kick off at 12:10pm but the first of the seven Group races on the program will be at 12:45pm with crack Snitzel colt Sizzling odds-on favourite for the $175,000 Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m).

Another notable showdown leading up to the big one is Race 5 at 2:30pm the $175,000 Group 3 The Roses (2000m) where a field full of 2012 Queensland Oaks hopes including NZ Oaks winner Miss Artistic, the Gerald Ryan-trained Angel Of Mercy, and Gold Coast Bracelet champ Scorpio Queen will come head-to-head.

Doomben Race 6 at 3:05pm is also worth keeping an eye on as the Peter Snowden-trained Mental, the early favourite for the upcoming 2012 Stradbroke Handicap, will look to stake their claims for the $1 million classic when they race in the $125,000 Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1350m).

Of course the race you’ll want to tune in on and have a punt on is then Race 7, the $500,000 Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) at 3:50pm.

It is shaping up as an intriguing Doomben Cup battle this year with Peter Moody’s ace imported stayer Manighar looking to make it a quartet of Group 1 wins.

They will face some stiff competition however taking on the likes of Allan Sharrock’s boom Kiwi mare Shez Sinsational and the fellow Moody-trained Lights Of Heaven.

With so much on offer at Doomben this weekend it is going to be a huge betting affair at the bookies.

But don’t just place any bet at any bookmaker!

The Doomben Cup Day tips are in from our experts and we have published them below so you can back a winner at the best price through!

Race 1 – 12:10pm – Channel Seven Benchmark 90 Handicap (1200m)

#4 Audacious Spirit ($3.60) from #3 Skating On Ice and #11 General Purple

Gillian Heinrich’s Gold Coast galloper Audacious Spirit was a big winner at this track and distance on New Year’s Eve and came back in good form to run second at home last week, they are down 2kg in the weights from that run and Glyn Schofield rides – hard to go past for $3.60.

Race 2 – 12:45pm Bollinger Champagne Classic (1200m)

#1 Sizzling ($1.85) from #3 Dances On Stars and #2 Noogoora Burr

Tipping the same Quinella as the Ken Russell, Sizzling is a little short for our liking but he is the rank horse here. Dances On Stars to come closer than they did in the wet last time and wouldn’t be surprised to see Noogoora Burr give them both a run for their money after their black type win here last weekend.

Race 3 – 1:20pm Carlton Mid Lord Mayor’s Cup (1600m)

#2 Ginga Dude (blink text=”$5.50″]) from #6 Solzhenitsyn and #10 Divorces

Like the win by Ginga Dude over the Eagle Farm mile last time out over Triple Honour and Scenic Shot, Solzhenitsyn also impressed last weekend at Doomben with a win for Heathcote while Snowden has a really consistent mare in Divorces.

Race 4 – 1:55pm Glenlogan Park Stakes (1350m)

#7 Risk Aversion ($6) from #10 Alltherightmoves and #15 Bound To Blush

Risk Aversion won third-up in an Eagle Farm stakes race on April 21 and has the Chris Munce factor, forget the failed run by Alltherightmoves on a Heavy (8) in the Silk Stocking, they will improve and can finish in the money while Bound To Blus has been doing a lot right in Sydney including their last start third in the Hawkesbury Guineas.

Race 5 – 2:30pm Hidden Dragon The Roses (2000m)

#4 Miss Artistic ($4.80) from #2 Invest and #5 Angel Of Mercy

Miss Artistic is a Group 1 NZ Oaks winner and is progressing towards the Queensland Oaks. She comes off a fourth in the GC Bracelet and she will improve at least a length on that with more distance and firmer ground. Invest is at a great price for an Australasian Oaks champ while Angel Of Mercy is drawn too wide to win but should finish hard and fast. #10 Angelus is another big improver and just misses our top three here.

Race 6 – 3:05pm Ascend Sales Fred Best Classic (1350m)

#1 Punch On ($11) from #6 Mental and #1 Easy Running

Think the favourite will be found out here and there will be a new Stradbroke Handicpa favourite after this. Love the price on Punch On, they are a Group 3 winner, a Magic Millions Guineas winner, the distance is right and they looked good in the Gold Coast Guineas when second first-up. Mental is classy but too short while Easy Running has form around these.

Race 7 – 3:50pm Kirks Doomben Cup (2000m)

#1 Manighar ($2.20) from #6 Lights Of Heaven and #9 Mawingo

Manighar is the definite horse to beat so long as he stays out of trouble from the inside alley. Moody has him rejuvenated and winning them all and he has beaten better then these. Lights Of Heaven is recapturing her old form and looked good in the Hollindale when second to Shez Sinsational, will come on from that and follow her stablemate through.

Race 8 – 4:30pm Darley BRC Sprint (1350m)

#2 Tiger Tees ($6) from #8 Free Wheeling and #10 Carry Me Bluey

Joe Pride’s Dubawi four-year-old Tiger Tees was last seen beating home Pinwheel in a cracker finish in the Hall Mark Stakes on Sydney Cup Day, distance looks right for them after a little break and they will have been kept ticking over. Free Wheeling has great form in Brisbane including a win on this day last year.
