Champagne Classic 2012 Odds Led By Sizzling

Kelso Wood’s crack Snitzel colt Sizzling has predictably opened odds-on favourite to win the 2012 Champagne Classic on Doomben Cup Day this Saturday, the youngster looking to stay unbeaten for the season.

Sizzling looks hard to beat in the Champagne Classic 2012 this Saturday

Sizzling caught the eye from his big six length win on debut at Eagle Farm last November and has raced competitively ever since.

They didn’t however win again until their big first-up victory at the Gold Coast on May 5 this year.

During their summer season Sizzling was the perennial placegetter.

They ran a close second to Noogoora Burr in the Listed Phelan Ready Stakes (1000m), second to Dreifontein in the Group 3 BJ MCLachlan Stakes (1200m) and then a close fourth to Driefontein again this time in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) on the Gold Coast in January.

The resumed three weeks ago and were back to their brilliant best posting a big four and a half length win over Dances On Stars in the Listed Ken Russell Memorial Classic (1200m), Sizzling relishing the Heavy (8) track conditions.

Saturday they will race on much firmer ground but are still the definite horse to beat in the $175,000 Group 2 Bollinger Champagne Classic (1200m) at Doomben Racecourse.

Due to run as race two at 12:45pm the 2012 Champagne Classic field features 11 hopefuls, Sizzling the $1.85 odds-on favourite to win.

Four of their rivals are then under double-figures in the Champagne Classic betting markets with:

  • #7 Discreet ($6.50) – Kelly Schweida’s young Brisbane filly gets the draw with gate four, Damian Browne to take over from Chris Munce who rode her to a close first-up second over 1100m at Ipswich on May 7
  • #2 Noogoora Burr ($7) – Anyone that got David Lawlor’s gelding at $40 last Saturday for their upset win in the Hampden Stakes well done, they failed in the Ken Russell but that was the track and those odds were generous for a stakes winner that has beat Sizzling in the past, not sure if they can win again here but the odds look about right this time
  • #5 Academus ($7) – Peter Snowden-trained Lonhro colt has just their second start having run a good second at Hawkesbury on debut on May 5, has the breeding but work to do from barrier nine, could be better a bit later on
  • #3 Dances On Stars ($9.50) – Early market mover, Gerald Ryan’s Snitzel colt won the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) first-up at Randwick before their second to Sizzling in the ken Russell, will be interesting to see what they give against them again on a dry track
