Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Gerald Ryan’s in-form Sydney filly Angel Of Mercy may have the right form leading into The Roses 2012 at Doomben Racecourse on Saturday but her trainer knows she has work to do from her awkward gate.
The daughter of Hussonet is the current $7 third pick in the bookmaker.com.au markets for the $175,000 Group 3 The Roses (2000m) after winning back-to-back races at her two most recent runs.
After a black type victory in the Listed James HB Carr Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on April 28 she travelled up to Queensland and scored a soft win in the Channel Seven Handicap (1600m) at Doomben last Saturday.
She rises in class and distance on Saturday on a short seven day back-up, and to make things tougher Angel Of Mercy has barrier 19 to overcome.
With the five emergencies coming out she moves into gate 15, last weekend’s winning Corey Brown maintaining the ride.
While the draw isn’t ideal Ryan said she gets back in her races anyway so he hopes that it won’t affect her position or finish too much.
“She’s got an awkward barrier but she races back in the field so hopefully they’ll go hard up front,” Ryan said.
“I’m not concerned about backing her up and her work is good.”
Above Angel Of Mercy, who is heading towards next month’s $500,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) at Eagle Farm, in The Roses betting markets are NZ Oaks winner Miss Artistic ($4.80) and Gold Coast Bracelet champ Scorpio Queen ($6).
Despite the wide draw Ryan hopes Angel Of Mercy can continue her winning ways this season, the trainer having fallen in love with her from day dot.
“I fell in love with her straight away when I first spotted her at the (2010 Gold Coast Magic Millions) sales,” Ryan said.
“She was a great looking filly and the pick of the sales (for $180,000) in my opinion.”
If she continues onto the Queensland Oaks Angel Of Mercy will be out to become Ryan’s third winner in the classic joining Mon Mekki (2002) and Arctic Scent (1996).
