A big field of eager three-year-old fillies will face off at Doomben on Saturday in the 2012 The Roses, but which of the youngsters is the one to back for the win?
An always hotly contested affair as it serves as a lead-up to the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) later in the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, this year’s edition of the $175,000 Group 3 The Roses (2000m) has drawn a capacity field of 16 starters and five emergencies.
While there is a New Zealand Oaks winner in the mix with Queensland Oaks 2012 favourite Miss Artistic narrowly leading The Roses betting at bookmaker.com.au at a quote of $4.80, really the markets are pretty open.
There are three other single figure chances and plenty of longer priced hopefuls with genuine claims for an upset The Roses 2012 result.
So should you follow the order of the odds and stick with Kiwi filly Miss Artistic to turn the tables on Gold Coast Bracelet winner Scorpio Queen ($6) with Gerald Ryan’s in-form Angel Of Mercy ($7) to finish off The Roses trifecta?
Or is there more value to be found backing a double figure outsider such as fellow New Zealander Dowager Queen ($17)?
With a full field and varied lead-up races to evaluate the Races.com.au team has taken the hard work out The Roses betting for our readers providing our exclusive tips on the feature below.
- #4 Miss Artistic ($4.80)
Price looks about right, she’s a Group 1 winner back home and will improve on her last run, can get the better of most of these and looks to have had the perfect length between runs, has been keen in trackwork and while the distance short of her best she has won over 2100m recently in NZ so think she’ll handle these ok
- #2 Invest ($10)
Comes off a Schweppes Oaks win over this distance, should be fresh, gets a draw (6) and Group 1 winners should never be discounted
- #5 Angel Of Mercy ($7)
Won over the track last start, steps up to the distance for the first time and how she handles that will be key, she is flying but best to stick to the place from that horror draw
- #10 Angelus ($8.50)
Is a definite improver, she didn’t like the heavy going for the Gold Coast Bracelet but bounced back last Sunday with a big win at the Sunshine Coast. On a short six day back up but is worth a Place Bet
Roughies We Like
- #7 Pretty Pins ($15)
Failed in the Bracelet but we are willing to forgive and say she was just finding her feet for the season, was better in the summer winning over this track and distance with a big 59kg on her back, like to think she can get back to that form and continue her love affair with Doomben (6-3-0-2)
- #9 Quintessential ($15)
Has form around the favourite having run third to her in the NZ Oaks, she probably isn’t good enough to win this but her 78% win and place rate is nothing to snub
