2012 Champagne Classic Tips & Selections

This Saturday one of the other highlights on Doomben Cup Day aside from the meeting’s Group 1 clash will be the Champagne Classic 2012, and while Sizzling is the raging odds-on favourite in the two-year-olds’ showdown, is he the Races.com.au team’s tip to win?

Noogoora Burr

Noogoora Burr is one of the Races.com.au's 2012 Champagne Classic place picks

Set to run as Doomben Race 2 at 12:45pm the $175,000 Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) features 11 hopefuls, five of which are at single figure odds in the latest bookmaker.com.au markets.

One of the best tried and most consistent in the field the Kelso Wood-trained Sizzling dominates the Champagne Classic odds at a quote of $1.85.

Highly competitive during the summer this son of Snitzel caught the eye with a big first-up win in the Listed Ken Russell Memorial Classic (1200m) on the Gold Coast on May 5.

They probably won’t have quite the same advantage on Saturday after lapping up the muddy conditions that day, but against a similar class of rivals they are being tipped as the horse to beat.

So is there a rival that can beat Sizzling home on Saturday in the Champagne?

There is certainly a few that will try their guts out to do so including the Kelly Schweida-trained improver Discreet ($6.50), last Saturday’s upset Hampden Stakes winner Noogoora Burr ($7), Peter Snowden’s lightly raced Academus ($7) and Ken Russell runner-up Dances On Stars ($9.50).

That’s what the Champagne Classic betting markets say but what about the Races.com.au tipsters?

We’ve done the Champagne Classic form, looking well over this field, and below have our insider predictions to help you clean out the bookies this weekend.

2012 Champagne Classic Tips – Doomben Race 2 Betting

First Over The Line

Really is the one to beat and deserved favourite, although based on their inconsistent strike rate $1.85 could be a little short. Their debut win was a cracker and they were good during in the summer, just not good enough for one smart Sydney filly in particular.

Showed they were back with their first-up win, but keep in mind the soft track worked in their advantage that day and they won’t get the same here.

Still the distance is ideal, their lead-up is right and Munce stays on. Tough to go past.

Close Second

  • #3 Dances On Stars ($9.50)

Really consistent galloper (W&P 75%), over from Sydney but got beaten by a big margin in the Ken Russell. Will be better on top of the ground so expect improvement, also a Group 3 winner in Sydney and Glyn Schofield stays on, will like a firm track and get the gate with two, could give Sizzling a surprise this time round at a great price.

Finishing Off Trifecta

  • #2 Noogoora Burr ($7)

Beat Sizzling in the Phelan Ready last December and that’s no easy task. Got written off after the Ken Russell failure but they just didn’t like it wet and they proved there was nothing amiss when winning the Listed Hampden last Saturday as a $40 roughie.

They aren’t at that price this time but I’d be willing to go Each Way on this one. They are at the right track but they need to back up and that will be the key.
