Waterhouse Dominates 2012 WJ McKell Cup Field

Sydney’s leading lady of racing Gai Waterhouse will saddle up a quartet of chances in the WJ McKell Cup 2012 field at Rosehill Gardens this Sunday, all four genuine hopes in the quality handicap clash.

Western Symbol

Western Symbol is one of four 2012 WJ McKell Cup chances for Gai Waterhouse on Sunday

Running as Rosehill Race 5 at 3:25pm the $100,000 Dodo Electricity McKell Cup (2400m) has this year drawn a final field of 11 staying types including four from the in-form Waterhouse stables.

Set to wear the No. 1 saddlecloth on Sunday is her Johannesburg mare Once Were Wild in barrier seven with Nash Rawiller riding.

Winner of the 2010 AJC Oaks the now five-year-old looked back to her best at Randwick last time out when running a close third to Niwot in the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m).

How she handles the step back from the two miles to 2400m on Sunday however will be key to her chances of keeping the good form going.

Once Were Wild is also the 59kg equal top weight in the field with her talented stablemate Western Symbol.

Drawn in the ‘visitor’s gate’ of 11, High Chaparral gelding Western Symbol will be ridden by Tommy Berry as they shoot for their fourth win from six starts this time in.

They took our their opening three starts for the season including the Group 3 HKJC Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill and the Listed JRA Association Plate (2000m) at Randwick in April and were last seen running a long neck away second to Star Of Octagonal in the Listed Rowley Mile at Hawkesbury on May 5.

Waterhouse will also saddle-up her last start Hawkesbury winner Reuben Percival (barrier five) and Queanbeyan Cup third placegetter Two For Tea (barrier 10).

Also in the WJ McKell Cup mix for Sunday are the likes of Chris Waller’s veteran stayer Hawk Island out to improve on their 11th in the Sydney Cup, the Paul Perry-trained HKJC Stakes runner-up Southern Skye and Peter Snowden’s Octagonal four-year-old Adroitly.
