Smokin’ Joey Leads 2012 BRC Sprint Betting

In-form gelding Smokin’ Joey is favourite to take top honours in Saturday’s Group 3 $125,000 Group 3 2012 BRC Sprint at Doomben.

Currently paying $3.20 at, the Anthony Freedman-trained four-year-old is chasing a fourth consecutive victory and was particularly impressive last start when scoring a dominant 2 ½ length win in the Group 3 Victoria Handicap.

A son of Encosta De Lago, Smokin’ Joey has a tough task to continue his recent run of form after drawing one of the widest barriers (14) in the 16-horse field.

Also drawing poorly is third favourite Tiger Tees ($5.50) who will come from one barrier inside Smokin’ Joey.

The Joseph Pride-trained gelding has an impressive resume of seven wins from 10 starts and is fresh off a tight win ahead of Pinwheel in the Hall Mark Stakes at Randwick in late April.

Pride is hoping Tiger Tees can overcome the wide barrier and add another victory to his resume in order to improve his chances of a start in next month’s $1 million Stradbroke Handicap.

On the second line of betting is Peter Snowden-trained colt Free Wheeling ($3.40) who has produced some quality performance of late after struggling earlier this year.

The son of Ad Valorem finished fourth in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes and then won the Hawkesbury Guineas by four lengths against a quality field that contained Pied A Terre and Landing.

Outside the top three, only Toowoomba-based gelding Carry Me Bluey ($8.00) is under double figures and he has received a decent barrier (9) to produce his usual consistent performance.

A winner of seven of 22 starts, the four-year-old has only missed out on a place-finish on five occasions and has shown promising form in 2012 with a runner-up finish in the Hinkler Quality Handicap and a fourth-place effort in the Prime Minister’s Cup.

Next best in the betting is Group level winner Dusty Star ($10.00) and Redoute’s Choice gelding Metallurgical ($15.00).
