Flemington Straight Six 2012 Field & Odds

One of the three Listed features on a crack Flemington race card this Saturday is the 2012 The Straight Six where a smart field of sprinters are set to run down Australia’s most famous straight.

Due to run as Flemington Race 5 at 2:21pm the $100,000 Listed The Straight Six (1200m) has drawn a final field of 15 hopefuls, two of which are battling for favouritism in the bookmaker.com.au markets.

Current top elect is the Mick Price-trained Stratcombe at a quote of $3.40 after their ideal barrier three draw.

The four-year-old Stratum gelding is out for their third win on the trot having won back-to-back races over 1100m at Caulfield.

Saturday will be their first look at Flemington since they bombed out down the straight in June last year and subsequently spent over seven months on the sidelines.

The other obvious fancy in The Straight Six odds at bookmaker.com.au is then Shopaholic at a quote of $4.

Danny O’Brien’s Pins filly won her opening three for the year including the Group 3 The Vanity (1410m) at Flemington and the Group 2 Angus Armanasco Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield before something went amiss when she ran 11th to Empress Rock in the Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1400m) on March 10.

Her The Vanity jockey Dwayne Dunn is aboard on Saturday with Glen Boss, who rode her for her past two starts, booked to ride Sean Mott’s $17 chance Verdasco.

There are then two other single figure chances in the latest markets with the Peter Moody-trained Curtana ($7.50) and Mark Kavanagh’s Street Cry stallion Liveandletdie ($8.50).

One of the longer priced hopefuls out for an upset is $15 outsider Perturbo from the Cranbourne stables of Colin & Cindy Alderson.

The six-year-old Jugah gelding runs for the first time since their close third to Rocking Force in the Listed Swisse Vitamins Stakes (1000m) at Flemington during Melbourne Cup Carnival week last spring.

They have a great record down the Flemington straight and ran a very close second to Dubleanny in this race last year, when carrying 53kg, and they would have won too had they not struck interference near the 1000 metre mark.

They do have to overcome the 60kg top weight that they share with last start Warrnambool winner Second Effort, but Cindy Alderson is pleased with where they are at.

“He’s very proficient down the straight, but he’s got a bit more weight this time around and it is a very strong field this year,” Alderson said.

“Hopefully he can acquit himself well. He’s always been a laconic trackworker, so it’s hard to get a good line on him, but he’s giving us all the same old signs that he’s come back well.”
