Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Astute Warwick Farm trainer Clarry Conners will give his Group 1 winning filly Invest her final lead up run in the 2012 The Doomben Roses in Brisbane this Saturday before she attempts a rare Oaks double.
Winner of the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville last time out on April 28, this Saturday Dehere filly Invest will line up against some classy types in the $175,000 Group 3 The Roses (2000m) at Doomben Racecourse.
The Roses 2012 is the traditional lead-up for three-year-old fillies heading towards the $500,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) at Eagle Farm on June 2 and this is exactly where Conners hopes to take Invest.
“It was always our plan if things went right in the Australasian Oaks to send her up to Queensland,” he said.
Drawn nicely in barrier six, into four with emergencies out on Saturday, Invest will be ridden by her regular rider Peter Mertens as she takes on the likes of Queensland Oaks favourite Miss Artistic, Hollindale Stakes winner Scorpio Queen, and the in-form Angel Of Mercy.
In a brave move Conners will spice things up on Saturday taking the winkers off, which she wore to win the Australasian Schweppes Oaks handing her trainer his first Group 1 victory in five years, to try and give her the edge for her Queensland debut.
“She’s had the winkers on for her last three starts but they’re coming off,” Conners said.
“She pulled too hard with them on in Adelaide and I’m hoping she’ll relax more without them.”
If successful on Saturday Invest will be Conners’ first The Roses winner.
“I’ve only had a couple of runners in The Roses and I’ve never won it,” Conners said.
He has however bagged himself two Queensland Oaks winners over the years.
The first was the brilliant daughter of Zabeeel Zagalia in 2003 who went on to run in that spring’s Caulfield Cup (sxith to Mummify), Cox Plate (4th to Fields Of Omagh) and Melbourne Cup (fifth to Makybe Diva).
His other was Rahy filly Allow who ran fourth to Gaze in The Roses before their big three lengths Queensland Oaks win in 2006.
Whether he takes Invest onto the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival this year is still up for debate.
“She’s not real big and has taken a long time to develop,” he explained.
“We’ll get the winter out of the way and give her a nice spell before deciding whether she’ll go to Melbourne for the spring.”
In the latest The Roses odds at bookmaker.com.au Invest pays a generous $10 and she is slightly longer in the futures Queensland Oaks markets paying around $13.
